Amazing Facts was holding a major evangelistic meeting in the biggest city in south Philippines. One big advertisement of Bible Prophecy seminar was placed in one of the busiest road in the city. It was quite a view to see Bible Prophecy pictures among the secular and sensual
advertisements in that road. HCBN PHILIPPINES and HCBN INDONESIA were teamed up to broadcast the event. The plans were to have one-day delay broadcast through satellite and live streaming through internet. That was a big leap of faith for us considering that all of the volunteers have no background in broadcasting. It was also decided that HCBN INDONESIA will handled the production and HCBN PHILIPPINES will take care of the pre and post production.
There were two volunteers coming from Indonesia and I was assign to go ahead of time to attend Agape Youth for Christ in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia before flying to the Philippines and to bring the production equipment (Datavideo HS-2000 mobile broadcast video mixer including the video recorder and converter). The other volunteer will have to follow later.
I had with me four luggage to carry (a day pack with computer, a bag for my clothes, one suitcase for the Datavideo recorder, converter and communicators and the mobile broadcast video mixer. Among these luggage, I can only check-in my bag of clothes, the rest should be hand carry. The video mixer is about 24 lbs. and the other luggage is about 13 lbs. and my backpack.
Before going to the airport, I was praying to God that I cannot let these two luggage to be check-in. The probability of the equipment being damage because of miss-handling is big. I’ve heard and see equipment/luggage damage in the airport. It’s just too risky for me to let it check-in. In my prayer I asked God to let me pass through the check-in counter and make the ground-crew ‘blind’ if possible so they will not ask me to go back and have my luggage checked-in because it’s too heavy to bring it on board.
In the check-in counter of Jakarta international airport, I initiated to let the crew know that I’m carrying video mixer and some other sensitive equipment in my other luggage. I opened and show them the equipment and they all understand. That was a relieved for me.
For those who have been to Kuala Lumpur International airport, if they are flying with budget airlines, they will know that they will have to walk for about more than 300ft from the airplane to the building and carrying those heavy stuff was not fun at all.
After attending, Agape Youth for Christ in Aenon Health Care, I had to continue my trip to the Philippines. I decided to buy a cheap trolley for the video mixer to make my life easier during this trip. Now, I was so confident that everything will be okay in the airport. God will take care of me.
Just before going to the security gate, I was praying and praying that God will let me in again just like what He did to me in Jakarta. Approaching the gate, I noticed a crew was looking at the video mixer in the trolley. The moment he stopped me, I said in my heart whiningly, “See, God, he stop me…”
He did stopped me and was telling me something which I didn’t hear well because I was so nervous and I started to explained to him, even while he was still speaking, that this is a video mixer, a sensitive equipment and it’s too risky to be checked-in. He looked me and said, “Trolley is not allowed on board. Please go back and have it checked-in. You can bring the equipment on board.” I was so surprised to hear that and immediately untie the trolley from the video mixer and leave it at the gate. The crew told me to have it checked-in but I said you can have it if you want and rushed inside the gate.
In the boarding area, when all the pressure is gone. A feeling of embarrassment overwhelmed me as I recall how I was whining to God when the crew stopped. God was there indeed and
took care of me. Although I had to walk again for a while to carry that heavy equipment, I will not complain again.
Arriving in the Clark International Airport Philippines, this time the custom officers stopped and asked to pay for the custom of the equipment. Although I already explained and assured to them that these equipment will be brought back to Indonesia and they still insisted that I have to pay. Later on, when I was explaining to them the purpose of my visit that is to have a church seminar in Davao city, the supervisor looked at me and ask “What church I belong to?” “I’m a Seventh-day Adventist and I’m a missionary,” was my replied. The atmosphere was abruptly changed. He started to say that he have some Adventist good friends and know a church nearby his house. He then asked me if I’m a pastor which is yes. We shook hands together and he said, “Welcome to the Philippines, Pastor Jerry.”
Oh, I was so happy to see how God performing His power before my eyes. Again and again He was reminding me that He will not failed to fulfill His promise.
From this airport, I took a bus for two hours to Ninoy Aquino International Airport to continue flying to Davao city. It was a busy morning in the airport when I went to the bathroom to fix myself and left one luggage that contain the recorder, converter and communicators in there. What make it worst was I realized that the luggage was not with me anymore after about two hours since I went to the bathroom.
I rushed to the bathroom to look for it but was in vain. I went around the airport to look for it, just in case somebody was mistakenly carry it but could not find it. I stopped for a while and offered a prayer to God. In my prayer I was telling God that if I could not find it, there will be no production for us. I was telling God, as if He doesn’t know, that this equipment will benefits millions of people with the Gospel through our satellite TV and internet. With all the reasons I could think of to remind God how important that equipment for us, coupled with some of His promises in the Bible. I rushed to the police station in the airport to report for a missing luggage. They advised me to proceed to the Lost and Found department. I went to another floor to look for this office but according to them they received no report yet.
A peace flooded my mind knowing that the equipment has been dedicated to the Lord. It’s His equipment. If it’s good for Him to keep it, He will keep it. I called the rest of the volunteers in Davao City to pray for the equipment. By this time, I should have checked in for my flight but I was just standing idly praying to God. At that time, I just have confidence that God will take care of the lost luggage. He is keeping it. What makes me wonder, when God will perform His miracle to bring back the luggage, because the clock is clicking and I need to check it. A thought came to my mind again, “Jerry, why don’t you go back again to the Lost and Found department?” and a second after that I was already rushing to that office.
The moment I open the door, I saw my luggage was just sitting right on a chair, as if waiting for me to pick that up. I didn’t see this when I came here first. “That’s my luggage!” I exclaimed which surprised the people inside the office. She then told me that somebody brought it here just few minutes ago. In my heart I said, “I knew you will keep it for me, God. Thank you so much!”
Once I filled up all the paper for the luggage to be released, I just had enough time to check again. I was nervous that the ground crew will not let me carry on board but I was reminded to what God has done to me in the previous flights. What I’m afraid of came true. They didn’t allowed to carry those equipment on board and I had to let it included in the check in. I argued
and reasoned with them on how delicate and important are these equipment. I even opened the switcher and let them see it but still they will not allow me.
Later on the manager came to see me and upon knowing the situation, she proposed to me a special tag for these equipment to be checked in in which I agreed.
The moment I sat down inside the airplane, I felt like all the burdens were lifted up and I’m finally on my last flight to meet the rest of the volunteer. I thank God for all the experiences He allowed to happen. Something came to my mind, I’ve been so tired carrying those heave equipment, always getting nervous every time I’m checking in myself in several airports, in this last flight, as if God is telling me, “You can now relax, Jerry. I’ll take care of your equipment now. You don’t have to carry those stuff anymore. I will be the one to do that for you.”
This thought brought tears in my eyes. I’m in awe to realize how close my God is to me. Looking back at those moments in the airports (Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippines), I saw only one footprint and that was mine. It was God’s footprint and the reason why only one because God was carrying me as I passed through unfavorable situation.
